2. Key Bill of Materials Remember to include fabrication materials, electronic component, and purchased sub-assemblies. 3. Please review your BOM above and assemble your file of PDF documents to hold the (SDS) Safety Data Sheet documents for your project. If you have not chosen a specific brand yet, please choose a similar to start your review process. Example: spray paint, select a branded spray paint fit for your general purpose like ‘high heat Rustoleum primer’ spray. After you have made specific choices, an exact choice can be substituted.

SDS documents are expected for: materials containing solvents, hazardous components, chemicals, heavy metals, batteries, structural materials (e.g. pressure treated lumber, galvanized metals, alloys, …), etc.

Please review the environmental and health impact sections to challenge the project choices and make any needed BOM changes. Example: there are high hazard and low hazard epoxy products on the market that functionally provide similar if not exact results.

These need to be chosen from your research to be for the US market and no more than 5 years old.

6. For the fabrication and energizing of your Electrical Systems, have you included your needed Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) in your B.O.M.? Please ensure it is specified and budgeted. S3 Mechanical & Physical Fabrications

Project requires the additive or subtractive modification of any of the following: Metal, Plastic, Wood/Paper products, composites, ceramics, glasses. Excluding fully commercial items that are not modified and used as intended by manufacturer.
1. How are you following the SDS safety requirements for the fabrication raw materials or ready to use components? If the SDS info changes the design or execution of the project, please describe below. Will some team members require respirator training as a result of the SDS review?*
2. Are you using each item on your Bill of Materials (B.O.M.) as intended by the manufacturer? If no, please describe here. As an example, if you were to use a bicycle tire tube for a shock absorber. You should also describe items that are bought and modified even if it’s for the same use. As an example, project starts with a standard wheelchair that will be modified and updated – describe the changes.*
3. Have you scheduled or planned your required PPE training per OSHA?*
3A. Please identify the required training and name who will be trained/certified. Examples: Respirator training for carbon fiber/composites work, paint, solvent based board prep work …*

S4 Flight Projects

Project Will Fly In Some Fashion Information regarding Flight Projects:

•Please note – a certified drone pilot is required due to new regulations: (http://www.faa.gov/uas/media/RIN_2120-AJ60_Clean_Signed.pdf )

•Capstone Senior Design Projects (or any other FIT project) cannot be operated under the provisions of ‘Hobbyist’; these regulation exceptions do not apply.

•Indoor testing of a drone that is of suitable size may be arranged (spontaneous indoor testing of a drone in the HSDC or elsewhere is not permitted)

•Outdoor testing of flight vehicles will require field permissions and/or permits.

•Outdoor testing of drone operation and flight vehicles requiring a runway/airfield are under new regulations and continue to evolve. An ongoing conversation as the project progresses will be necessary to plan field testing. Procrastination will result in disappointment.

S5 Propulsion Systems

This system is designed to provide motive force to a project.
1. During Fabrication or Testing and Evaluation (T&E) what are your safety precautions to prevent injury from normal, expected operation of the system or subsystem under T&E. Examples:
1A. Is there a prop that needs a cage to be trialed? *
1B. Do you have an appropriate mount designed for the engine test stand?*
1C. Do you have remote prop starting capability?*
1D. Standard Operating Procedure to be written for engine starts and adjustments while the engine is fired? *
2. What are possible failure modes of your system or components during operation that need to be prepared for in order to prevent injury if such a failure occurs? Please describe. What will your preparations include to prevent injury from these types of failures? Please describe the possible scenarios and preventative measures to be taken. There may be several to consider*
S6 Marine Projects

Designed to be in or under the water for project use/performance (salt or fresh).
1. If SCUBA or Boats are to be used, approval must be obtained from the FIT “Director of Marine and Outdoor Operations.”( tfletcher@fit.edu ) When, before water contact will this be done?*
2. What are your companion credentials that are required to test your project (e.g.: Driver’s license with FIT insurance validation, FAA UAS [Drone/RC aircraft] registration for FIT, Boating Safety Education ID Card? (Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boater safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and a boating safety education identification card issued by the FWC or temporary certificate issued by an authorized vendor)*

S7 Competitions

Projects following strict competition guidelines regardless of actual competition participation.
