2. Key Bill of Materials

Please upload a spreadsheet for your bill of materials (BOM). Remember to include fabrication materials, electronic component, and purchased sub-assemblies. Also include assembly materials like adhesives, solder, paint, etc.

Please provide links to the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for each item. If you have not chosen a specific brand yet, please choose a similar to start your review process. Example: spray paint, select a branded spray paint fit for your general purpose like ‘high heat Rustoleum primer’ spray. After you have made specific choices, an exact choice can be substituted.

SDS documents are expected for: materials containing solvents, hazardous components, chemicals, heavy metals, batteries, structural materials (e.g. pressure treated lumber, galvanized metals, alloys, …), etc.

Please review the environmental and health impact sections to challenge the project choices and make any needed BOM changes. Example: there are high hazard and low hazard epoxy products on the market that functionally provide similar if not exact results.

These need to be chosen from your research to be for the US market and no more than 5 years old.

4. Personal Protective Equipment - Using the Bill of Materials SDS package assembled above, Please name the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Training needed for the L3HSDC to provide (tab in the last cell to add more lines). (Safety glasses, gloves, long trousers, …)

S1 / S2 Small Electrical & Electrical Systems
1. How are you following the SDS safety requirements for the Electrical or Electronic components?
2. Are you using each Electrical / Electronic item on your Bill of Materials (B.O.M.) as intended by the manufacturer? If not, please describe each modification or change in use.
3. How are you assuring circuit safety? What measures are being taken? Fuses, circuit breakers, relay systems, software interlocks, independent circuits to stay at lower voltage & amperage use…
4. How are you protecting people from electrical hazards during the project build and in the finished project? Physical barriers or designed encasements? Fully insulated circuits / no wires or power connections exposed? Please describe in physical terms.
5. For the fabrication and energizing of your Electrical Systems, have you included your needed PPE in Section 4 (Personal Protective Equipment)? Please ensure it is specified. Please describe it here in general terms. (safety glasses, ESD protection, long sleeves and/or trousers, appropriate gloves…)
6. Does your project involve direct live voltages over 24V and or amperages over 20 amps? If so, please describe the requirements.
7. Does your project involve underwater electrical systems?

S3 Mechanical & Physical Fabrications

Project requires the additive or subtractive modification of any of the following: Metal, Plastic, Wood/Paper products, composites, ceramics, glasses. Excluding fully commercial items that are not modified and used as intended by manufacturer.
1. Please identify the potential manufacturing processes that you will be utilizing. Examples: Composite Layup, Milling, Sheet Metal Bending, etc.
2. How are you following the SDS safety requirements for the fabrication raw materials or ready to use components? If the SDS info changes the design or execution of the project, please describe below.
3. Are you using each item on your Bill of Materials (B.O.M.) as intended by the manufacturer? If no, please describe here. As an example, if you were to use a bicycle tire tube for a shock absorber. You should also describe items that are bought and modified even if it’s for the same use. As an example, project starts with a standard wheelchair that will be modified and updated – describe the changes.
4. In your fabrication work, will you be using paint, fuels & lubricants, solvents, corrosives, adhesives, composite binders, treatments of any sort ?
5. Do you have any non-faculty advisors? If yes, what are their qualifications?
S4 Flight Projects

Projects including an Unmanned Aerial System, Rocket, or any other form of flight
Information regarding Flight Projects:

Unmanned Aerial Systems (Rotor or Fixed Wing Drone)
- UAS Contstruction is required to comply with FAA Part 107 unless explicitly approved otherwise. FAA Part 107
- UAS operation is required to comply with USC 44809 (The Exception for Limited Recreational Operations of Unmanned Aircraft). USC 44809

Rockets
- Rockets are required to comply with FAA 14 CFR 101 Subpart C
- NAR Membership and High Power Rocketry Certifications are required if applicable.
Flight Testing

All flight testing requires written testing plans and approvals before testing may occur.
- Indoor testing of a drone that is of suitable size may be arranged. Spontaneous indoor testing of a drone in the HSDC or elsewhere is not permitted.
- Outdoor testing of flight vehicles will require field permissions.
1. Does your project include an Unmanned Aerial System (Rotor / Fixed Wing Drone) or a Rocket?
1a. Will your Unmanned Aerial System comply with FAA Part 107? If no, explain why.
1b. Will your rocket comply with FAA 14 CFR 101? If no, explain why.
1c. If no, explain the flight method?
2. What are your companion credentials that are required to test your project (e.g.: FAA TRUST Certificate, FAA UAS registration, NAR Membership and High Power Rocketry Certification, etc.)?
2a. Does any team member already have any of the previously mentioned credentials? If yes, who and what credentials do they hold?
2b. When, before testing, must you obtain #2? Please evaluate and plan for the lead-time.
3. Please name your proposed test location(s) and identify permission requirements:

S5 Propulsion Systems

Project includes designing a propulsion system (propeller, rocket engine, jet engine, etc.). This is not applicable to purchasing commercial off-the-shelf propulsion systems. Standard Operating Procedures are required to be written and followed for propulsion system startups and adjustments while testing.
1. During Fabrication or Testing and Evaluation (T&E) what are your safety precautions to prevent injury from normal, expected operation of the system or subsystem under T&E. Examples:
1A. Is a protective cage required for the propulsion system to be tested?
1B. Will a thrust stand be built to test the system?
1C. Does your system include a remote activated start?
1D. Please provide any additional safety precautions that are required for testing the propulsion system.
2. What are possible failure modes of your system or components during operation that need to be prepared for in order to prevent injury if such a failure occurs? Please describe. What will your preparations include to prevent injury from these types of failures? Please describe the possible scenarios and preventative measures to be taken. There may be several to consider.
S6 Marine Projects

Projects to be in or under the water for use/performance (salt or fresh).
1. If SCUBA or Boats are to be used, approval must be obtained from the FIT “Director of Marine and Outdoor Operations.”( tfletcher@fit.edu ) When, before water contact, will this be done?
2. What are your companion credentials that are required to test your project (e.g.: Driver’s license with FIT insurance validation, FAA UAS [Drone/RC aircraft] registration for FIT, Boating Safety Education ID Card)? (Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boater safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and a boating safety education identification card issued by the FWC or temporary certificate issued by an authorized vendor)
3. When, before testing, must you obtain #2?
4. Have you verified that all Materials on your BOM are not Eco toxic per the respective SDS (Safety Data Sheet)? Especially for introduction or prolonged exposure to water.
5. Proposed test locations (s) – please name all locations including on-campus locations and who will be contacted to gain permission. Permission and contact person must be named and obtained for all test scenarios
S7 Competitions

Projects following strict competition guidelines regardless of actual competition participation.
